Getting Ready

I went out today after work to look around. Found some good sign at place where I hunted last year. There was big, little, and small tracks every where I looked!!!!!!! Even found a nice HONEYHOLE   I think will work out great come muzzle loading season. Really wished I could have had my REMINGTON when I saw what I thought was a good solid 8-pointer .Better than a 4-point, but could have been a 10 -pointer.  U. N. T……TURBO

Blinds or Stands

Everybody has their own opinion or reason.  I`m a little different I`ve had 4 knee surgeries so using a climbing tree stand is a no no. But there is a lot who love them (climbers) thats good. I`ve tried many stands before I found some that I like. It is a cross between a lock on and a ladder stand. I found it at http://www.bassproshops  API PACKMASTER ladder stand. It is fairly light @24#, easy to pack in the woods and lock on to the tree of choice. I found it was comfortable despite the way the seat looks like. Next would be the blind of choice mine was doghouse blind . It gets you out of the weather an if you have a young hunter moving around. Days that you just dont fill like climbing a tree you can set up  the doghouse in a short time. It lets you move around a little more if need be. Or you can hunt on the ground like I did on my first hunt with just GOOD LUCK. Or WISHING I WAS IN A TREE STAND.                                                                                                                  U.N.T.    TURBO

LUCK

Turbo, Homey and Johnny loaded up and drove to our hunting farm. Next morning nobody had seen any deer. So I thought I would look around and maybe find some more sign, and eat lunch @ the same time. As luck would have it we found a lot of sign, crossings, rubs, scraps, tracks, beds. It was a package deal and I had not heard of anybody hunting in that area before. (LUCK) So after lunch we decided to try the new spot out, we spreaded out and waited. Johnny and I had our hopes up but we did not see any deer that afternoon. Well as LUCK would have it, we was looking to see a deer at any moment, when HOMEY`S gun rang just across the hollow. It was so peaceful and quite until that 7 mil. broke the quietness. Homey a few minutes later called on the radio and said that he had shot a good doe. The weekend hunt was good because Homey had filled one of his tags, me and Johnny came home with both our tags. Just like “Back in Time” that’s is how LUCK goes, we had a good time anyway just being out in the woods listening and watching the wildlife.

Deer Steaks

Below is a delicious recipe! I’m not for sure where it originated from maybe it was my grandmother or maybe it was yours. Recipes have a mysterious way of being handed down and changed around throughout the years! Do you have a wonderful recipe that you could add? Or a useful comment Like our friend Colin!

Deer Steaks Ingredients

  • 6 1/4 inch thick slices of venison loin or more,
  • 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and cut in half
  • 3 tablespoons of whole black pepper corns, coarsely crushed
  • 3 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil

 Directions

  • Rub each steak, on both sides, with a cut garlic clove.
  • Press the cracked black peppercorns into one side of each steak.
  • Melt the butter and olive oil.
  • Heat, add the steaks. Fry them on each side

All Day Comfort

I have bought several stands over the years, looks of comfort doesn’t always work. Some stands that I thought would be comfortable because they looked good in the long run it didn’t always workout! Stands that I thought looked roughed up and uncomfortable like last minute buys or on sell items have turned out to be the best ones.

Which ones are the best for you?

I’ve had a variety locking, ladder, climber, and I have even had a tripod stand. There heavy but I like it the best! It looks uncomfortable but I can sit in it all day. I guess it’s try and try until you find something you like.

Do you treat?

Do you treat your camo? Using a good U.V. killer could mean filling your tag or not! I’ve had some close encounters and screw-up’s. I didn’t know if I had moved or if it was may camo not treated. Once the deer see’s you, your busted. They won’t take there eyes off your position, so I think you should treat your camo. While deer hunting everything that you can put on your side the better chance you’ll have in filling your tags! What do you think?

Know Them Or Not ?

I was invited to go hunting with an employee and his family several years ago. I hadn’t known him for very long, but ya know I feel if your a hunter it’s probably okay. (Was I wrong) I arrived at his house about 5:00am and I was then introduced to everyone then we left for the woods. I like to deer hunt a lot so I was ready. I waited for daylight to come, when it did it sounded like everybody was shooting but me! I just thought I must be in the wrong place. After about 35-40 shots, it stopped. I thought somebody sure was lucky. I waited till diner, without seeing a deer and I headed out for lunch. When I got to the designated spot I saw two guys already eating. I asked them but they had not seen any deer either. When they all got out of the woods we were talking and trying to figure out who was doing all the shooting. One guy finally said that he thought he had seen a deer and had shot several times. But decided it was a stump. Another guy said that he thought he had seen a deer and had shot several times as well but it turned out to be a stray dog!

So I was thinking here I sat with a bunch of guys who don’t even know the difference between deers and stumps or dogs. I decided at that point to just go home and hunt somewhere else. The moral of this story is that you must do a little homework before you go hunting with anyone you never know they might just be trigger happy!

ATV or UTV

I have a Honda Rincon 650, which I like really well! But I out riding with my wife I think the UTV would be better. More comfort for the both of us and more storage space. Then there is deer hunting with my hunting partner. Put two grown men on a four-wheeler, two guns, two stands and you are pretty well loaded. Then if my stepson goes, you have three on or you make two trips. I know (no passengers) but everyone doesn’t follow the rules.

That’s why I’ve been thinking about buying a UTV. Is it worth it for the room? Comfort? Storage? But I can’t decide which to buy! We ride a lot in the summer and hunt a lot during deer season! Some ideas would be nice from anyone who has one or the other. They are like trucks, both options are good and bad and sometimes better one way than the other! Any ideas?

Right Place, Wrong Time!

I’d been scouting and found what I thought was the perfect place to go. There was no four-wheeler trail to it or a road either. I had parked my four-wheeler and started walking and looking around for some good deer signs. I began seeing signs, the farther I went the more I noticed. Finally, I got to where I thought was a really hot spot!

There was lots of scraps, rubs and trails so I decided where to hang a stand where I could see the most area, assuming which way the deer I thought would be coming into my hot spot.

I got my stand hung up and thought I was in the middle of nowhere. I went back in a couple of days later to hunt the area. Just my luck, I had seen no deer! So I thought maybe I should give the area a few more days to air out. That morning I had planned on going back but it was pouring the rain so I planned on going back later. By afternoon it had stopped raining so I took a chance and went back.

When I got to my hot spot, what a disturbing site I had seen! There about 20 yards from my stand was a pile of guts from a buck! The more I looked around I had found that the killer of the deer was in my stand at that time, because they had left their candy wrapper in my stand. I never found who it was!

So no matter what spot you think you might have found chances are someone else will sooner or later find it to just as you did! I hunted there several more times and did kill a small 6-pointer. But I never did run into the person who rented my stand without paying. I guess that’s part of hunting!  U.N.T……….Turbo

Hunting Not Killing!

I had got off early one day so I decided to grab my bow and I went up behind my house. I had seen some deer in the distance, and my neighbor’s had said there was some real nice bucks running around while I was walking. I rode to the top of the hill next to little pond about twenty foot round. I got over to the edge of the thicket, hoping a deer would come get a drink. Then I heard something out of sight. I waited then there she was, a doe at about 50 yards coming my way.

Remember everybody has a limit, to make a good solid shot mine self emposed was 40 yards. Then suddenly she turned and went into the brush. I could hear her walking in the dry leaves. I was following the sound just waiting for the right time and opprotunity to connect. Then just like a ghost, there was no more sound.  I thought I knew where she was from where the sound stopped. So I just waited for her to move!

All of a sudden she blowed, just to say that she out smarted me, because she wasn’t where I thought she was . She had traveled nearly another 150′ and  circled me ending up standing in a clearing at about 15 yards behind me. I couldn’t move! She had found me and was stomping her foot and blowing at me. Within minutes she had discovered that she had won this fight and I watched her bounce away.

That’s why they call it hunting not killing! You can’t always fill your tag but what a thrill it was!  Until Next Time……Turbo
